Supporting your child starts with taking care of yourself. Create small, daily moments of connection, whether it’s a bedtime routine, a shared meal, or a walk together. Model healthy coping strategies by practicing deep breathing, maintaining structure, and setting aside time for self-care. Seeking therapy through mental health services for yourself or your child can also provide valuable guidance.
Therapy is a journey, not a race. Focus on one small step at a time and celebrate progress along the way. Keep a simple journal to track helpful strategies, and schedule time to practice coping skills. If you feel stuck, check in with your therapist to adjust your approach as needed.
Parenting comes with emotional ups and downs, and it’s okay to feel overwhelmed. When emotions run high, pause and take a deep breath before responding. Give yourself permission to take breaks, ask for help, and lean on support systems like family, friends, or a behavioral health professional. You don’t have to do it all alone.
Create predictable routines to reduce stress for both you and your child. If chaos takes over, step away for a moment, take a few deep breaths, and reset. Find grounding techniques that work for you – listening to music, stretching, or practicing mindfulness – to regain a sense of calm.
Prioritize small, achievable habits instead of aiming for perfection. Whether it’s a few minutes of journaling, movement, or talking to a loved one, every step counts. Set gentle reminders and give yourself grace if you miss a day – what matters is getting back to it.
Use age-appropriate language and make talking about feelings a regular topic of conversation in your home. Normalize emotions by saying things like, “Sometimes I feel sad too, and I talk to someone who helps me feel better.” Encourage open-ended conversations and remind them that seeking support is a sign of strength.
